I had to paint this one in two sittings because I was trying to capture the sunset and the light through the tree. When painting outdoors the scene changes very fast with the setting sun.

This is my second attempt at the Ventura River. The acrylic colors dry fast and darker than what I paint, so I need to make adjustments.

Just before you enter into the oak grove in Wills Canyon there are a couple of nice hilltops that make a perfect spot for composing a painting.

The water was high in the Ventura River the day I went out to paint, I didn't want to cross the river and get my boots wet. So I went to the swimming hole and painted this one.

Rose Valley is located about eighteen miles above the Ojai Valley. This waterfall is just below Rose Valley Falls.

After Rose Valley got thirty three inches of rain Rose Valley Falls was flowing very strong.

I assisted Rick Bisiccia build the trail up to Kennedy Ridge and beyond. This view was painted on an afternoon in June just as the fog had lifted and was still disipating. .

I returned to Rose Valley Falls with my brother Joe and my nephew Patrick over the Forth of July weekend and I painted this waterfall in two hours. I ussually spend four hours at a site working on a painting.

This is the first painting I did while instucting a plein air art class in Yosemite. We painted from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, this is what half dome looked like at 10:00 AM. The second painting of my week was started with unwanted results so I worked it until I was pleased with it. We had afternoon thundershowers for the last couple of days providing an impressive run off for the day I painted this.

The third painting came together like magic. My students were spread out around the meadow and I spent a minimal amount of time on it. It is my favorite of the week. I just loved the way the sun shone on the brush and trees coming down the rock.

On the fourth day I painted the oak tree in the meadow, I was so fascinated with the highlights in the tree as the day progressed. I had painted the tree from the other side in a watercolor winter scene earlier in the year. I felt it needed to be represented again.

On the last day of instructing I wanted to show two children how you could capture the essance of a scene with a simple palette knife. The previous day my friend Hank had shown me a knife painting he had done that day and I wanted to show him one also. He came along and we talked about our art for the week and our hikes.
